What is the NaturNet-Redime Portal?

The The NaturNet-Redime Portal is designed to aid awareness raising, training, presentation and sharing of knowledge and tools related to sustainable development and environmental management & protection in Europe. It was developed as part of the NNR multi-disciplinary research project which was co-funded by the European Commission within the Sixth Framework Programme (2002-2006). It has been built as an interoperable network for an effective exchange of the information, knowledge, and services relating to its multi- and interdisciplinary subject matters. The portal is implemented using AJAX technology (WEB 2) supporting an easy management of information within the portal and enabling an easy context awareness for knowledge discovery using the new concept of Uniform Resource Management (URM). This URM concept results from research introduced by the NaturNet-Redime project and supports a sharing of knowledge within the community using metadata and catalogue standards for information description and discovery. The system for authorisation and support for a unique login for all components is also an important part of the portal.

How to work with the NaturNet-Redime (NNR) Portal?

The portal supports those users searching for information dealing with the subjects of sustainability, environmental protection & management and is also a place for others to publish related information and resources.

Simple information searching

It is possible to search by terms within several categories (this list of categories is not limited and could be changed or increased). Firstly, you can choose from one of several possible folders (‘all’, ‘documents only’, ‘projects’, ‘maps’, etc.) by selecting the tabs at the top of the page, which enable you to search using your SEARCH TERM either more generally or within a restricted range. The (main panel) window will then display the results of your search within the catalogued information. You can then check the metadata for any of the listed items or you can run the application or view the document in those cases where the listed items are directly linked to a document or an application.

Extended searching

An extended search is also a possible tool to search for information in a variety of ways. You can choose from any of the parameters listed in the left window or use the map window. The map window offers a way to select the geographic area in which you are particularly interested. You can select by country or a smaller detailed area from the whole of Europe using the selection rectangle for zooming.

A combination of both windows provides a better opportunity to precisely specify the required information.

How to publish information?

The knowledge publishing facility is only available to registered users. If you wish to obtain a password, you can either fill in the online questionnaire or send your request by email to the address horakova at ccss dot cz.

Publishing possibilities:

Publishing your documents on the NNR portal

You can use the Metadata Extractor, to find your file on your computer; using the Metadata Extractor (file searching), ask for extraction of the available metadata, then complete the missing metadata and publish your file and its metadata on the NNR portal.

Publishing of your Web pages on the NNR portal

You could publish any Web content through the NNR portal. Put your web address (URL) into the metadata extractor and extract the metadata. Edit the missing records in the metadata (including a selection for the type of your content) and then save the metadata.

Registration of your metadata system on the NNR portal

If you have a catalogue system supporting the following profiles (ISO 19115, ISO 19 119 and Dublin Core ISO 15836-2003 and supporting the Catalogue Service for Web on the side of the catalogue server (Micka, GeoNetwork) you can ask for registration of your catalogue on the NNR portal.

Registration of data or services directly from your application

If you are a developer of applications who directly publishes interactive Web data or services, you could ask us for the CSW client, which will support direct registration of your results in the catalogue.

Publishing using NNR tools

You may use the independent NNR tools for working with your data, or for their integration into new systems and presentation in e-learning or web services forms.

NNR Tools that are available on the NNR Portal:

Moodle

A course management system (CMS) Moodle is an Open Source software package which helps educators create effective online learning courses and websites. The software is used all over the world by universities, schools, companies and independent teachers.

Micka

The Micka is a Czech designed metadata and catalogue system providing on-line metadata searching and editing.
The Micka supports following basic functionalities :
- ON-LINE metadata editing
- Import / export tools
- Context help
- OGC-catalogue 2.0 (CWS) support
- Extensible (user defined elements, standards…)
The standards implemented into Micka are ISO 19115 Dataset metadata, ISO 19119 Services metadata (in development), ISO 19110 Feature Catalogue (data structure), ISO 19139 XML exports and Dublin Core for other metadata. The Micka is a multilingual system which currently supports both environment and metadata information in several languages (English, Czech, German, Poland, and French).

MapMan

The Map Project Manager (MapMan) is a software tool for users who want to create new map projects and compositions. You can use the tool for works focused on the use and display of GIS data in the Internet environment. MapMan is capable of creating various map compositions and you can use different data sources – data on the local server, but also data available through web services, which are saved on an external server. MapMan could be closely linked to other developed components – metadata systems and the DHTML map client. You can use this functionality for searching for data on external servers. MapMan is directly linked to map visualisation clients and the change of its design has been made.

Mobserv

The mobile applications are developed for a PDA running Microsoft Pocket PC 2003, or higher, in combination with a GPS functionality. This device fits well for the presentation of e-learning content and also for the presentation of spatial data. Cartographic and object data can be added offline to the PDA or can be installed by downloading packages from the Internet. These packages can be configured online, giving the user the chance to define which maps, regions and types of object data he wants to download, depending on his needs, bandwidth and available storage space on his PDA. The functionalities of the mobile applications can be divided into the presentation and the data acquisition part.

Vis3d

The 3D models are built up from existing geo-data sources using standardised web services for geo-data exchange. You get the 3D-viewer which contains navigation elements (pan / zoom / rotate) as well as an overview map and additional information buttons.
